Description

General: Cultivated in 1888, A. japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is a small, slow growing, upright tree that grows to 15-20' tall and is as wide as tall. It also has a multi-branching, sparsely dense growing habit.

Leaves: 7 to 13, but usually 11, palmately, deeply, lobed leaves. Fall color is brilliant shades of scarlets, oranges, and crimson reds.

Flowers: Conspicuous red flowers, just before leaves appear around April.

Fruit: Inconspicuous/ Not showy.

Bark: Smooth grey bark with a showy silhouette form in the winter.

Culture

Growing Conditions: Partial shade to full sun. Fall color will be affected by the amount of shade. Prefers well-drained soil.

Maintenance: Low maintenance. Pruning needed just to form shape and no major insect pests to report.

Transplanting: Spring or fall dig only. You may need to root prune a season prior when moving older trees.
