Suminagashi Japanese Maple
Description:
General: This slow growing, up-right
Japanese maple exhibits a more open growing habit then many of
the other red leaf Japanese maples and will grow to around 15
feet in height.
Leaves: Large, deeply 7 lobed reddish
purple leaves, dividing nearly to the petiole of the leaf. Holds
leaf color well throughout the season turning to a bright red
crimson in the fall.
Flowers: Insignificant
Fruit: Samaras, not too showy
Bark: Smooth gray bark.
Culture:
Growing Conditions: Sun to partial
shade. Prefers well-drained moist soil but will do well in a variety
of soils.
Maintenance: Very low maintenance,
light pruning need only to shape.
Transplanting: We have had success
transplanting these in spring and fall.
Hardiness:
Zone 5 to 8.
Experience at Great Hill:
We have had great success growing these at Great Hill. They require
little maintenance and show a strong hardiness for our winters.
Attributes:
A great landscape specimen tree that forms a nice open branching
habit. Has outstanding color throughout the growing season.
